Sloppy Joe’s are a popular tasty dish. I was recently inspired to try a home made healthier, gluten free version using nutrient dense ingredients. The nutritional profile of 100% grass fed beef is high. Pastured beef provides essential nutrients that other foods do not contain and is part of a healthy diet. Grass fed meat contain more omega 3 fatty acids, conjugated linoleic acid, vitamins A and E compared to grain fed beef. These nutrients are considered anti- cancer and heart healthy.
After some examination of several Sloppy Joe recipes, I chose the best sounding ingredients and settled on the one below. Fortunately, this version was my first attempt and a success. My recipe contains all of the ingredients listed, but I believe this would still taste good without the coconut aminos, soy sauce and syrup.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon refined organic coconut oil
- 1 pound grass fed organic ground beef
- 1 small organic onion diced
- 1/2 -1 organic red bell pepper or 1/2-1 carrot diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1tsp. chili powder
- 1 8 oz. cup organic tomato sauce
- 1/4 cup organic ketchup
- 1 tbsp. organic maple or date syrup (optional)
- 1 tbsp. coconut aminos
- 1 tbsp. gluten free, GMO free Tamari soy sauce
- 1/4 cup water
Directions:
- Heat coconut oil in large skillet and add onion, bell pepper/carrot, garlic and beef until beef is cooked, stirring frequently
- Drain fat if desired
- Add seasonings and other ingredients until well heated
Serve on gluten free bread or 1/2 potato. Makes 4 servings. Enjoy!
