Is it Time for Your Flu Shot or Extra Nutrition?

January 2015 340It’s that time of year: flu season. Pharmacies are advertising their flu shots. Medical groups and physicians urge patients to get their vaccinations. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone get vaccinated, including newborns, pregnant women, children and the elderly.

Is there a better, safer way? What are the risks of the flu vaccine versus the relative benefits? It can be argued that improving nutrition during the winter months is a safer, more effective means to prevent flu and other respiratory illnesses. Continue reading

More Evidence Proves Nutrition Beats Vaccines in Preventing Disease

fermenting 063Several doctors are beginning to speak out against the danger of vaccines. In her recently released bestselling book A Mind of Your Own, holistic, functional medicine trained psychiatrist Kelly Brogan explains why she opposes vaccinations.

Brogan shares a fascinating example of how the nutrient selenium was used to prevent and treat Keshan disease in China, replacing the vaccination proposed by Western researchers. Brogan also discusses how vitamin A can be used to treat and prevent measles, along with vitamin C to address tetanus, in place of toxic, dangerous vaccinations. [1]

Famous dentist Weston Price described the perfect health of indigenous groups of individuals who had natural immunity to tuberculosis from excellent nutrition, not from vaccinations, in his revered book Nutrition and Physical Degeneration. Comparative studies of unvaccinated and vaccinated individuals add to the argument that vaccines are not the answer to disease prevention. [2] Continue reading

Traditional, Gluten Free Pasta Con Broccoli

Summer 2014 437I once avoided pasta with rich cream sauces due to my misinformed fear of healthy fats. Now I embrace these foods made with traditional fats.  I use the best ingredients I can find and usually serve with a fresh garden salad and baked wild salmon. Pasta is high in carbohydrates, which can convert to sugar and fat, but the fat in the cream and butter helps to balance this out. By serving with a protein like salmon, the meal becomes balanced and healthy. Try and find tomato sauce or paste in a glass jar to avoid the leaching of chemicals in cans caused by the acid of tomatoes. Continue reading

Delicious Blueberry Muffins (gluten free, dairy free, egg free/or regular)

th (38)

My one daughter is temporarily on a gluten free, dairy free, egg free diet,  so we have been experimenting with recipes. We tried these recently and they were a huge success. Only thing we would change is to add more blueberries next time.  Bake and enjoy if you like blueberries. We tried to use the best possible ingredients. (With no dietary restrictions, use organic whole milk, pastured butter and one pastured egg instead of applesauce; also with a wheat flour, there is no need for xanthun gum). Yield: 12 muffins. Eat Fat, Lose Weight

November 19 2014 200The conventional wisdom recommending individuals decrease calories, increase exercise and then wait for the pounds to fall off is incorrect. A calorie is not a calorie. When one eats sugar or carbohydrates that quickly convert to sugar, fat is produced in the body. In contrast, if one eats healthy fats, the body feels more satiated and the fat eaten converts to energy. While reducing calories matters, the type of calories eaten is an important variable. Why Butter is Better and Ways to Eat More

Butter on home made blueberry banana breadButter, the long-demonized fat, has made a resurgence. With the recent recognition that trans fats are unhealthy, educated consumers are using more of this traditional fat. Butter, particularly pastured, organic butter, is high in many essential nutrients. Contrary to popular belief, the saturated fats in butter do not contribute to heart disease. Butter offers protective powers against several illnesses. Sweden, in fact, recently changed their country’s health guidelines to include more healthy saturated fats and less processed carbohydrates.

My New Blog

yosemitesunsetDSCF5989I have wanted to start this blog for over a year. I love to write, but was overwhelmed by the technical aspects of my own blog. I forged ahead because  I have an overwhelming need to share what I believe is life saving health information. Yes, there are other websites and blogs out there, but I want to add my two cents to the conversation. The more voices that are raised and heard, the better it will be for those seeking important information on alternative health care and holistic nutrition.  Continue reading
